Spring GIS Career Fest is a Homerun!
February 2012 - The 6th annual ASU/AGIC GIS Career Fest on Thursday, February 16th was
a tremendous success. Over 100 students attended the event and were able to learn how a large
variety of organizations use geospatial technologies in the workplace. They were also able to talk
to practitioners from over 30 different groups about what skills they should work on to succeed
in their fields. For more information on this year’s GIS Career Fest, visit

THE LAST ISSUE of SURFACE MATTERS is PUBLISHED!
August 2011 - Summer 2011 issues of Surface Matters and the Graduate GIS Guide
Jim Riedman, Surface Matters publisher, said the following about the last issues of Surface Matters, "Here are the last TWO, yes TWO issues of Surface Matters!
One is a special issue that I'd been planning to do for some time. It focuses on the graduate GIS programs at Arizona's three universities. There's lots of information
in it and you may be surprised at all of the options. If you or anyone you know is even slightly considering graduate-level GIS education, make sure this issue is part
If the consideration. In fact, it may open your eyes to new opportunities and you might want to go back to college!
The second issue is the last, alas, issue of Surface Matters. It's much less serious than the first one. It's a wrap-up issue that I think you'll quite enjoy.
It's been fun writing Surface Matters.
Thank you for your interest and participation over the years. I hope you've found it amusing and worthwhile.
Finally, of course, we have a few
roundup and calendar items."

AGIC Fire Briefing
(.ppt)
June 22 2011 - A Powerpoint presentation was presented to the AGIC Data Committee members during the
June 22, 2011 committee meeting. The Powerpoint
contains useful information about the wildland fires in Arizona and
a number of useful links to locations with the latest data. The Powerpoint is now available
for download.
The new Modernization Roadmap for the Geospatial Platform (version 4) as discussed in the last AGIC Council Meeting(.pdf)
May 2011 - The partner agencies of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC)
are developing a Geospatial Platform to more effectively provide place-based products and
services to the American public. The Geospatial Platform will be a managed portfolio of
common geospatial data, services, and applications contributed and administered by authoritative
sources and hosted on a shared infrastructure, for use by government agencies and partners
to meet their mission needs and the broader needs of the Nation.
AGIC Strategic and Business Plans -
April 2010 - AGIC Strategic and Business plans were accepted and approved at the AGIC
Special Board Meeting on February 25, 2010. They are now available for download. Follow this link to download the
documents AGIC Strategic and Business Plans.
AGIC CAP Grant Update
November 2009 -
The AGIC Strategic and Business Plan Project, supported by a Fifty States Initiative CAP Award
from the FGDC, has completed the statewide survey and workshops conducted around the state. There
was an overview of the survey and workshop findings presented at the AGIC Conference in Tucson. As
a part of that presentation, additional comments and information were gathered for the project reports.
Strategic and Business plan findings are now being compiled into reports that will be delivered in December
2009. These results will include an assessment of statewide geospatial needs for Arizona GIS Stakeholders and
as input for an AGIC strategic plan and for a Clearinghouse business plan. Initial drafts of these two plans
will be available for review by the Project Team, AGIC Board members and AGIC Committee members.
Comments will be collected and provided back to the consultants. Final plans will be presented at
the first AGIC Board meeting in 2010.
July 2009 - Governor Jan Brewer signed Senate Bill 1318 (SB1318) into law on July 10, 2009 marking an important day
for GIS in Arizona. This is a very significant piece of legislation for the Arizona GIS community which will help to strengthen
GIS in the state and allow for more effective operations
AGIC Teacher Resource Page July 2009 - AGIC has launched its new Teacher Resource Page! The Resource Page contains
classroom ready GPS lessons aligned to the Arizona Academic Standards. Created by Arizona teachers, these lessons are designed to
help teachers introduce geospatial technologies to students K-12, while addressing academic content and standards. The site also
includes links to useful GPS articles and lessons found on the Internet.
ADEQ Makes Datasets Available December 2008 -
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has provided a number of environmental datasets for download.
These datasets are available on the Arizona Geodata Portal. A variety of agencies
around the state will find these files helpful with their GIS projects.
Arizona GIS Roundup
2008 - Development of statewide Enterprise GIS will enable applications for homeland security, emergency response, wildland fire and support the program
and business needs of agencies. The Ramona GIS Inventory is an easy to use, no cost resource which allows state/local/federal agencies to create a profile about
their organization, data holdings, distribution and management policies. The system provides a very quick way to search these GIS profiles and discover geospatial data in Arizona.
