When the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project was launched in 2017, only 6% of the global ocean bottom had been surveyed to resolutions below 1 km. The project recently announced that high resolution bathymetry data are now available for 19% of the ocean floor, which is up from 15% in just the last year. The higher resolution data will help improve models that forcast climate change, improve fisheries and conservation efforts or sea life, as well as improve commercial interests, such as laying or pipelines and cables
