2025 AGIC Symposium

The AGIC Symposium is coming up fast.  Plan to be at the Prescott Resort in beautiful Prescott, AZ from August 26-29 to network with and learn from other GIS Professionals and Vendors from across the state.  Important dates to remember:

*July 11: Last day to add a company logo to the conference T-shirt

*July 15: Last day to nominate someone for the annual AGIC awards.  Visit the conference website, under Award Nominations for more details.

*July 18: Last day to apply for the Tony Gonzales or Women in GIS Scholarships.

*July 28: End of early bird registration rates

*August 4: Last day special conference rates for hotel are available

*August 15: Last day to submit an entry to the Maps and Apps Contest.  Visit the conference website for more details.

Resources for Educators

Arizona Geographic Alliance: The purpose of the Arizona Geographic Alliance (AzGA) is to strengthen geography education in Arizona.  Their site offers lesson plans, activity books, and more focused on K-12 geography and GIS education.

Esri GIS for Schools: Resources for teachers, club leaders, school district administrators and more with links to activities, events, and resources for those involved in Kindergarten through 12th grade education.

Geospatial Revolution: Produced by WPSU Penn State, this site includes videos showcasing how geospatial technolgoy is changing the world.

Green Drone AZ: Green Drone AZ offers both middle and high school programs which allow students to explore topics of conservation, natural resource management, and technology such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), or drones. Concepts are first introduced to students at a broad level and then focused through the lens of a real-world conservation project located just outside of Mesa, AZ on the Lower Salt River, Tonto National Forest.

National Geographic Education: Videos, case studies, and resources categories by grade level and curated by the National Geographic Society.  Site also includes MapMaker lessons, where students can work with an interactive map.

 

Resources for Prospective GIS Professionals

Occupation Profile for GIS Technologist and Technicians: This US Department of Labor Career OneStop site provides valuable information for those interested in pursuing a career in GIS.  Those starting in the GIS field typically begin as a GIS Technologist/Technician, or equivalent.  This site provides useful information about the job, including projected employment, typical wages, necessary education or experience, and more.

GISDegree.org: For those wanting to pursue a GIS career, this website makes it easy to view degree programs (both in-person and online) separated by state and degree type (bachelors, masters, PhD, certificate, associates, and more.  There is also a site focused on different career paths within GIS, such as GIS analyst or urban planner, that summarizes the necessary skills, job outlook, and a salary survey for each path.

UCGIS GIS&T Body of Knowledge: The University Consortium of Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) GIS&T Body of Knowledge is a comprehensive outline of the concepts and skills unique to the geospatial realm.  The information has been used as a basis to design curriculums and assess educational programs focused on GIS.  It has also been used by businesses to influence hiring practicies and can be a good guide for GIS professionals to determine where to focus knowledge and skill building.
